I have interests and needs. You have interests and needs. Everyone has interests and needs. It is an aspect of our humanity. However, as Paul urged. . .
“(3) Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (4) Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4 ESV)
What Paul stated did not imply the neglect of self, but urged away from becoming so self-absorbed that other’s interests or needs are ignored. Someone has said, “Self-absorbed is when your own pleasure matters more to you than the needs of others.” (original source unknown) Sometimes our focus needs to turn from simply what we want to do, to what ought to be done in the moment.
I need to be ready and willing to encourage, even when I need encouragement. It lifts me up in redirecting my focus. In looking beyond self (i.e. Ephesians 3:13), it can open the door for mutual encouragement. (i.e. Romans 1:12)
I need to be ready and willing to give of my time, even when I am very busy. It reminds me of the significant impact and wise use of the time God has given me. (Galatians 6:10; Ephesians 5:15-16)
I need to be ready and willing to give of my money, even when things may be a little tighter than usual. It reminds me to keep my trust in God’s continued provision. (i.e. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5)
In this way and other ways, in being willing to bless I am also blessed. In being this kind of brother, I can also trust that I will be blessed with such brothers and sisters as well.
As Solomon wrote. . .
“(24) One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. (25) Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.” (Proverbs 11:24-25 ESV)
There is blessing in blessing. It follows the principle of reaping what we sow. So, may this mindfulness matter to us!
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE BLESSING IN GIVING!
