The expression “same old song” generally refers to that which has become familiar, repetitive, and even boring or tiresome and often reflects on that which no longer excites. Have we lost a sense of excitement for life? Has our life become dull and too much routine? As we look at our life, do we ever find ourselves singing the same old song; thinking the same old things, expressing the same old thoughts, complaining about the same old things, etc.? Do we ever wonder about things that perhaps have not changed and therefore expect nothing else to do so? Though the development of good habits which continue to be a part of daily life can be good (especially those of a spiritual nature), do we ever feel our life has sort of flatlined or begun to feel a bit stagnant?
Though there is much in life around us over which we have no control, where we personally focus can bring change to our own life. Are we beginning there? Are we looking to the things of God and His ability to move our life from the dull to the delightful? Are we finding delight in living for Him with a steadfast hope in the assurance of even better things to come?
David had his ups and downs and challenges in life — some brought on by his own choices and others by the choices or focuses of others — but still he would write. . .
“ (1) I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. (2) He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. (3) He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:1-3 ESV)
David lived encouraged by the awareness of God regarding everything going on in his life. In viewing how God had sustained him in the past, he looked for the continuation of such. This gave cause for praise to continue rising from his lips. With God putting a “new song” in his mouth, David acknowledged how this would continue drawing the attention of even others to Him.
As we have begun a new year, rather than being brought down by discouraging thoughts of the past, let us allow God to place a new song in our heart as we praise Him for having brought us through to this point in our life. Let us remain encouraged with excitement for the life God is bringing us through as we — like Paul (note 2 Timothy 4:18) — trust His ability to ultimately safely bring us to our eternal home above. May we see this new year as opportunity to glorify God with a new verse to Him!
Have a great day SINGING A NEW SONG FOR A NEW YEAR!
