We seem to live in a very health-conscious society, and many have “physicals” on a regular basis. However, how long has it been since we had a “spiritual”? Many are living unaware of the severity of their true heart condition and the resulting lack of genuine spiritual fervor for pressing on in life. As some jump about from following one diet fad after another in relation to the seeming constantly changing advise of the “experts”, there are also those who flit here and there from one ideology to another. (i.e. Ephesians 4:14) In spite of much learning there remain those who are still unable to come to a knowledge of the truth. (i.e. 2 Timothy 3:7) What marks our spiritual health?
In the second letter to the church at Corinth, Paul exhorted. . .
“(5) Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? — unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (2 Corinthians 13:5 ESV)
In the examination results of our own life, what are we seeing? Is Jesus Christ truly reigning on the throne of our heart and over our life? Is the EEG revealing our mind is duly focused on the Eternal Elements of Godliness; the things above? (Colossians 3:2) Is the EKG revealing a heart truly loving the Lord and what relates to the Eternal Kingdom of God? (Matthew 6:33; Mark 12:30; James 2:5) And is the MRI indicating movement further toward Master Resemblance Imaging? (Luke 6:40; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 4:13) Is the beat of our heart in sync with the Lord’s Sovereign Will enabling an ongoing transformation more and more into His likeness? Is Jesus Christ truly in us?
In a psalm of Asaph we read. . .
“(26) My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26 ESV)
Let us be encouraged that even though our physical health might not be what we would like, our spiritual health can still be strong! May we continue to bear in mind that eternal significance as we remain open to the spiritual examination we need!
