There is a saying that has been attributed to more than one individual that states: “Only dead fish go with the flow.” Such is true in its literal sense in that a dead fish will merely flow in the direction the water takes it. Being dead, it has no means of swimming against the current. However, its figurative meaning is most important to grasp as we live our life.
Looking around we can see how easy it is for far too many to simply go with the flow of the majority or what is sensed to be the status quo, rather than giving some individual critical thought to ideas promoted and the direction they may ultimately lead. Though water will flow the path of least resistance, there are times we need to resist and go against the flow of even what seem to be popular ideas. Even Jesus noted the path chosen by the majority is not a good rule of thumb since the easy way leads to destruction while the harder one leads to life. (Matthew 7:13-14) Simply said, going with the crowd is not wise because we are merely left to the mercy of wherever that flow takes us.
Understanding the mercy of God provides a much better way, let us bear in mind Paul exhortation to Christians at Rome where we read. . .
“(1) I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (2) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2 ESV)
In a world not focused on the things of God, many are headed toward destruction because their mind is so set on earthly things. (Philippians 3:9) Our mind is to remain set on things above (Colossians 3:2) even as we live life in this earthly realm because God’s purposes regarding life are much higher than the purposes of the world. God’s purposes transcend this realm to that of an eternity with Him. In spite of the strong currents of worldly ideas, may we continually seek God’s strength to keep moving against the flow as we are drawn onward and upward toward Him!
Have a great day PRESSING ON FOR ETERNAL LIFE!
