For us to be spoken to and not listening could be considered being discourteous. However, for us to speak and not be listening to ourselves would be deceptive. In the hype of speaking the truth, being hypercritical of others while not focusing on the correction of our own life, is hypocritical!
Jesus instructed. . .
“(3) Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? (4) Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? (5) You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:3-5 ESV)
Though Jesus acknowledged the help we can be to one another, where we must begin is with self. As we look at others, are we beginning with an honest look at ourselves? Doing so will aid us in maintaining a proper attitude as we assist others.
In addressing some of the leaders of the day, Jesus stated. . .
“(1) Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, (2) “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, (3) so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.”” (Matthew 23:1-3 ESV)
Do we practice what we preach? When it comes to what we proclaim, is our daily life revealing the same?
In his letter to Christians at Rome, referencing some who may have thought themselves to be guides to the blind and instructors of others (Romans 2:19-20) Paul asked. . .
“(21) you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? (22) You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?” (Romans 2:21-22 ESV)
It has been said, “Don’t quote what you don’t obey.” (original source unknown) As we speak the truth are we ourselves listening? What do the actions of our life reveal?
John urged. . .
“(18) Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18 ESV)
Having accepted the truth of God’s word, may we not only lovingly express it (Ephesians 4:15), but also genuinely live it (i.e. 3 John 4) as we understand most often it is actions which speak louder than words. May we listen and lead by example!
Have a great day CONSISTENT IN WORD AND DEED!
