If only I had a different job. If only I had a different position. If only I lived in a better neighborhood. If only (whatever else comes to mind). “If only” lists could go on and on in causing us to think it is no use trying where we are or because of how some things are going. This brings to mind a quote posted on my office wall which reads: “In spite of everything life is good.” That quote is attributed to Anne Frank who kept a diary of her life of hiding with her family in an attic during Nazi persecution. What was reflected in her life was the power of attitude over circumstance. It is a focus that looks for what is good or the good impact that can occur despite current situations. Rather than focusing on “if only” which generally serves to only bring us down, it is a focus on “in spite of” we will look for the ways in which God can use us where we are.
Such was reflected in Paul’s exhortation to those who were bondservants where we read. . .
“(22) Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. (23) Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, (24) knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:22-24 ESV)
Though some may view a boss or supervisor under whom they work as a slave driver, the focus urged by Paul can still be applied to present day work situations or bearing in mind generally that whatever we do ought to be done to our best ability as we look beyond mere human elements and seek to glorify the Lord in our doing. Therefore, in spite of everything else, let us always live mindful of honoring Christ fully in our hearts with the goal of pleasing Him as we honor Him in whatever work we engage in and the manner in which we respond to others!
Have a great day WILLINGLY SERVING AS A LORD PLEASER!
