The statement has been made: “The only sure way to avoid criticism is to think nothing, say nothing, and do nothing.”
How well do we think that will work? To be known for doing nothing would itself seem to open one up to criticism, would it not? The reality is that as we go through life and say things, we will face criticism. There will always be those who will not accept our point of view. We will even be wrong at times. But this is true for every human being. Shall we all just shut up and do nothing?
As we involve ourselves in the activities of this life we will be criticized. There will be those who will question our motives. There will be others who think their own way would be better. And there will be times our actions may not be as they ought.
Criticism is not always easy to take, especially when it is unjust. We can easily be tempted to keep quiet, do nothing, or let others do our thinking for us; all in an attempt to avoid criticism.
To fail to do will not ward off criticism, but will bring us under the criticism of God. Therefore, let us consider what the Scriptures say about actions or the lack thereof.
James stated. . .
“(17) So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.” (James 4:17 ESV)
James also exhorted. . .
“(14) What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? (15) If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, (16) and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? (17) So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:14-17 ESV)
And Peter urged. . .
“(13) Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13 ESV)
God knows we are not perfect. That is why He has given us His gift of grace. However, His expectation is for us to act upon what we do know from His revealed word. He also expects us to act upon that which we believe. Are we prepared for action? Since we cannot avoid the world’s criticism, let us live mindful of whose criticism we most want to avoid; God’s! Though the world will criticize, as we do our best in seeking to please God, we can be assured of receiving His praise!
Have a great day PUTTING FAITH INTO WORDS AND WORDS INTO ACTIONS!
