Recently making a typo (which is not a rare thing), I was duly reminded of the huge difference one letter can make. Intending to type “brother” I left out the “r” and typed “bother”. As I consider relationships within God’s family, do I view any brothers as a bother or continually as a brother. Also, what most characterizes my own life: a bother or a brother?
When Cain became angry with his brother Abel due to his offering not being acceptable while his brothers was (Genesis 4:3-5), the Lord God spoke to Cain to dissuade his anger and warn him of the rule it desired to have over him. (Genesis 4:6-7) Unfortunately Cain allowed the door to open to his sin and killed his brother. (Genesis 4:8) We then read. . .
“(9) Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”” (Genesis 4:9 ESV)
Is that what Cain thought of the relationship? Those are words which seem to imply no sense of any concern or responsibility in the relationship at all. In consideration of this, it has been noted that bees need keepers while brothers need brothers. We could include in this the notion that sisters also need brothers and sisters; those who share a genuine interest and concern about their life (i.e. Romans 15:1-2; Philippians 2:3-4; Galatians 6:2) and the need for us each to be that kind of brother and sister.
So, “r” we a “bother” or a “brother” or a sister? May the manner in which we are connected to one another both glorify God and bring the blessing of mutual benefit!
Have a great day BEING WHAT GOD’S FAMILY NEEDS!
Carl
