REASONABLE EXPECTATION!

September 12, 2024 by Carl Hanson

“Que Sera, Sera” was a song released in 1955 sung by Doris Day. It means — as the song relates — “Whatever Will Be, Will Be”. As reflected in the lyrics of the song, the future is not ours to see. Though, as Christians, we can know what our end will be, we do not know what all may be ahead to be experienced as we go through life in this realm. However, to simply do nothing and let life be what it will be is not a productive way to live.

It has been said, “Expecting success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted.” (source: calendar quote)

            Solomon wrote. . .

“(4) The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing.” (Proverbs 20:4 ESV)

In such a case, “whatever will be, will be” nothing, since nothing was done. Such should be a reasonable expectation though the sluggard might reason differently.

Earlier in Proverbs we find. . .

“(4) The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” (Proverbs 13:4 ESV)

Even with an understanding there are unknowns relative to the future, there can be a reasonable expectation of something when diligence is applied. Even earlier Solomon urged going to the ant and learn the value of work and preparation, rather than experiencing the poverty of doing nothing. (Proverbs 6:6-11) As this is so regarding our physical labors, it is certainly true in connection with our spiritual labors in the Lord.

Writing to Christians at Corinth Paul urged. . .

“(58) Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:58 ESV)

Despite all our efforts perhaps not panning out as planned at times, our labors in the Lord are noted by Him (i.e. Proverbs 19:17; Matthew 6:4; Matthew 10:42; Hebrews 6:10) and will not be for nothing! May we therefore maintain a proper degree of diligence and so reasonably expect some good to be harvested!

Have a great day LIVING AS A LABORER IN THE LORD!

Our Mission

Truth For Teens was originally a publication with a circulation of over 500 to youth throughout the United States.  This was possible because a group of men and women felt a need to provide healthy, helpful information to our youth as they deal with daily situations.

That need has not changed. The Central church of Christ at Pflugerville, Texas has decided to oversee this continuing, important ministry with this website and publication of a regular newsletter available to all teens around the world. We want the truth of God to be available as the “truth for teens” as well!
