The manner in which some are sorry is a sorrowful sight. For those it is not sorrow for having done wrong, but only for having been caught. When it comes to sin, there needs to be an acknowledgement that leads to change because repentance is not merely an apology, but an acceptance of what God calls sin and a willingness to turn from it and back toward Him.
Paul provided a contrast between superficial and true grief over sin in stating. . .
β(10) For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.β (2 Corinthians 7:10 ESV)
Sin is separation from God and therefore spiritual death. (Isaiah 59:2; Ephesians 2:1) When sin is duly acknowledged for what it is, godly grief leads to changing the direction of life actions and brings us into the realm of sin being blotted out. (i.e. Acts 3:19) Rather than regret for having the sin exposed, there can be rejoicing that needed change was seen, providing the opportunity for true repentance. The revealing removes regret in the turning as the blood of Jesus is also seen as remaining adequate to cleanse from all sin. (1 John 1:7) Rather than being left in it, we are moved from it! May we experiencing the blessing due acknowledgement of sin is intended to bring us into as we humbly allow God to keep our life properly turned around!
Have a great day CONTINUING TO TURN TOWARD GOD AND HIS SOVEREIGN WILL!
