The statement has been made: “If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.” [Quote attributed to Regina Brett] Though there may be exceptions, generally speaking there is a lot of truth in that statement. How often have we begrudged our circumstances — thinking we had such an unfair amount of challenges in life — until we realized what others around us were having to deal with? We look around us and often wish we could be as carefree as others appear, but if all were known, those we envy might not be as carefree as they seem. Perhaps they are just doing so well at coping with their situation we are unaware of the struggle that is really theirs.
It is amazing how simply taking a look at the challenges others are facing can change our whole perspective on our own life. Focused on our own trials, we sometimes lose sight of the good things that are still ours and the reality things could be worse. We should also be encouraged that by the grace of God we are not receiving what we really deserve. (note Psalm 103:10)
The challenges Paul faced in his ministry were great. He pressed on even in the face of some heavy challenges. His reluctant listing of some of those trials bears this out. (2 Corinthians 11:23-27) Still, we do not see him throwing himself a “pity party”. Instead, Paul tried to help others retain the perspective that appears to have empowered him to press on despite life’s challenges and even unfair treatment. Even the writer of Hebrews — after listing the examples of many heroes and heroines of faith (Hebrews 11) –reminded his readers as they focused on what the Lord endured for them (Hebrews 12:1-3) that in their struggle against sin, they had “not yet resisted to the point of shedding [their] blood.” (Hebrews 12:4 ESV)
In Paul’s letter to Christians at Rome he declared. . .
“(18) For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” (Romans 8:18 ESV)
Some of the challenges we face may be more severe than what others are enduring. However, even then, with a focus on the eternal glorious existence the Lord has in mind for us, can we view them as light and momentary? (2 Corinthians 4:17) They will pass while our blessed eternal life in Christ will continue. To Him be praise forever and ever. Amen!
Have a great day KEEPING LIFE IN PERSPECTIVE BY LOOKING AHEAD!
