BUMPER CROP!

February 10, 2023 by Carl Hanson

[02/10/2023 “teEn-MAIL”]

A “bumper crop” refers to an unusually abundant harvest, but has been applied to other areas of life when addressing the experience of gaining much more than expected. When such is the case, where then does the focus turn? Is it to God in thanksgiving? Is it to self with a sense of peace regarding the future? Is it toward caring and sharing?

When Jesus told the parable of the rich fool faced with the bounty of his crops, his focus turned squarely upon himself. (Luke 12:16-19) Just reading the language used by Jesus in telling the parable it is easy to see this farmer had a real “I” problem; the pronoun “I” appears six times in the English Standard Version. With his eye focused on his bounty, there was no thanksgiving toward God, nor any hint of considering how he might help others. It was all about a set future of comfort from his fortune. However, we might say he was the poorest of the poor because he was “not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21) Though he had plenty to sustain the flesh, he had nothing to sustain the soul.

Someone has said, “When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence.” (original source unknown)

Employment provides a living, but what marks the character of our life in light of it? Our gain — our being blessed — is not to be merely about self, but also others. Paul noted this in his letter to the church at Ephesus where we read. . .

“(28) Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.” (Ephesians 4:28 ESV)

We might say that just as stealing is wrong, so is an unwillingness to share with others when we are in a position to do so. Most of us have been blessed beyond our own personal needs. As we thank God for our abundance, let us remain mindful of the sense in which we have been blessed to bless? It is not about hoarding away, but giving way to generosity toward others. Sharing what we have is part of the good we have been called to do that is pleasing to God! (Hebrews 13:16) Rather than more barns or fences, may we extend the table!

Have a great day LOOKING UPWARD IN GRATITUDE AND OUTWARD IN GENEROSITY!

                        Carl

Our Mission

Truth For Teens was originally a publication with a circulation of over 500 to youth throughout the United States.  This was possible because a group of men and women felt a need to provide healthy, helpful information to our youth as they deal with daily situations.

That need has not changed. The Central church of Christ at Pflugerville, Texas has decided to oversee this continuing, important ministry with this website and publication of a regular newsletter available to all teens around the world. We want the truth of God to be available as the “truth for teens” as well!
