As Paul was dealing with a matter of sexual immorality within the church at Corinth, he reminded them of the life that was to be theirs in Christ. We read. . .
“(7) Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. (8) Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (1 Corinthians 5:7-8 ESV)
Having been united with Christ through baptism as death to sin and then raised to walk in newness of life (Romans 6:3-4), life is to be lived as a new lump; pure and unleavened rather than mixed with the ways of the flesh and the world. Christ is the “Passover lamb” offered once for all. (i.e. Hebrews 7:27; 9:26; 10:10) And unlike the Passover commemorating the exodus from Egyptian bondage that was celebrated for seven days each year (Exodus 34:18), the celebration of having been set free from the bondage to sin ought to be all the days of our life. How? By keeping removed the leavening influence of malice and evil and instead living life under the influence of the “unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” Therefore, let us never take for granted the deliverance we have received in Christ as we press on in the new life in Him while looking forward to the ultimate deliverance into the eternity of Heaven.
Have a great day SINCERELY CELEBRATING LIFE IN CHRIST!
Carl
