It has been said, “You are known by the company you keep.” Those among whom we draw into fellowship or with whom we hang the most can become our identity in the view of others. It can also become the greater influence on our life. What marks our chosen company?
Solomon stated. . .
“(20) Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” (Proverbs 13:20 ESV)
And Paul warned. . .
“(33) Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”” (1 Corinthians 15:33 ESV)
Between Solomon and Paul, we should recognize the personal danger of wrong associations while understanding the benefit of proper ones. James also wrote. . .
“(4) You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. (5) Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us”?” (James 4:4-5 ESV)
Are we feeling the strong draw toward God? Though we are in the world and cannot always choose who we may be around, the company we do choose to be drawn into is important to consider. We are to be the influence of salt and light in this world to the glory of God (Matthew 5:13-16) and are strengthened to serve as such through our abiding connection with God and our association with those of kindred godly spirit.
As one of the psalmists wrote. . .
“(63) I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.” (Psalm 119:63 ESV)
As we consider the company we choose to be drawn into, may it be with those who have been drawn into company with God!
Have a great day APPRECIATING THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE GOD-FEARING!
Carl
