An expression I have somewhat grown to dislike is the response “Whatever”, especially since the tone in which it is expressed is generally dismissive of what has been said. It is almost as if to say, “I’m done listening.” The word “whatever” has also been used in a permissive sense; individuals set on doing whatever they want regardless of what is right or how it might impact others. However, there is a “whatever” focus which should be acknowledged as comprehensive in how it relates to our relationship with the Lord and to others. Let us consider one aspect of this today, and Lord willing, three other uses of “whatever” over the next few days.
In his letter to the church at Colossae, Paul urged. . .
“(17) And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 ESV)
The Greek word translated “whatever” here is “pan” (from “pas”) which radically means “all”. It is akin to “panta” which signifies “wholly”. What we do is to comprehensively reflect our due consideration of the Lordship of Jesus over our life.
The word “panta” is what Paul used in urging those at Corinth. . .
“(31) So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV)
Whatever we do! All we do! The whole of what we do! Are we remaining mindful of how our life overall is to reveal Jesus to comprehensively be the Lord of our entire being and thus bringing glory to God? He is our Redeemer (Titus 2:14), Savior (2 Timothy 1:10), Passover Lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), our hope (1 Timothy 1:1), our peace (Ephesians 2:14), our life (Colossians 3:4) and hope of eternal life (John 3:15-16), our access to the Father (John 14:6), etc. As the Sovereign over all (Ephesians 1:20-23; 1 Timothy 6:15) may He remain so over us so that our life will wholly glorify Him!
Have a great day LIVING TO GLORIFY THE COMPREHENSIVE CHRIST!
