Considering the expression “whatever” not dismissively or permissively, we are to comprehensively consider the way we are with others. What marks our expectation and interaction in all of life’s encounters? Are we allowing the actions of others to dictate ours, or are we continuing to be mindful of what we do and say being drawn from the spirit by which the Lord desires us to live?
Jesus urged. . .
“(12) So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 ESV)
The Greek word translated “whatever” here is “panta” (from “pas”), which means “all”. The idea here refers to all we do — or wholly what we do — is to be as we ourselves would wish to be treated. This is not reflective of doing to others as they have done to us. That would fall into the category of either retaliation or merely quid pro quo (i.e. I’ll do for you with the expectation of you doing the same for me). What Jesus urged is doing what is right regardless of what might have marked the actions of another. It is the comprehensive focus of always treating others in the manner in which we desire to be treated; graciously, kindly, lovingly, mercifully, patiently, etc. As we wish from others, may we always do!
Have a great day COMPREHENSIVELY CONNECTING WITH CHRIST’S GOLDEN RULE!
