When a line has been crossed, in many cases it is possible to cross back over. One may still feel the effects of having crossed the line (i.e. bumps and bruises, burns, some scarring, etc.), but the life may still be saved. Climbing back to safety may not be easy and accepting rescue may be embarrassing or at least humbling, but when it comes to saving the life, whatever it takes should be accepted.
Paul spent many years on the wrong side of the line. He was involved in actions of which he was later ashamed. He had been a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogantly violent opponent of Christ and the church. (1 Timothy 1:13) However, he accepted the opportunity to cross back over and received a second chance at life.
Paul encouraged. . .
“(15) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. (16) But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.” (1 Timothy 1:15-16 ESV)
Paul, the “foremost” of sinners, received forgiveness. His message of encouragement was that if the grace of God was adequate for him, it would be sufficient for you and me as well. Forgiveness is possible. However, there must still be a genuine repentant spirit that is truly sorrowful for the sin, not merely for having been found out. (note 2 Corinthians 7:10)
Peter encouraged. . .
“(3) His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, (4) by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV)
God is all about providing that which is completely sufficient. His grace can adequately deal with our sins. The blood of Jesus is sufficient to cleanse us of all sin. (1 John 1:7) May we accept the opportunity afforded for returning to His side of the line. Like Paul, let us desire above all things to be “found in him.” (Philippians 3:9) Therein we will find eternal safety.
Have a great day APPRECIATING BEING DRAWN TO SAFETY IN CHRIST!
