One of our greatest defenses is the book we call the Bible, or God’s Word. Some question the Bible as the authoritative word of God. Some might even say, “Prove the Bible.” What a great challenge. I have heard some say, “If they found Noah’s ark, I would believe.” Truly, finding the ark would be a great and wonderful discovery, however, the accuracy and truth of the Bible hardly hinges on the discovery of the ark.
A very young science, called archaeology, studies the past through the discovery of artifacts from previous peoples and cultures. Currently, there are many efforts and digs taking place in the area often referred to as the Bible Lands. Archaeologists have discovered many interesting things that support the biblical record. Many cities that the Bible mentions were thought to be gone. However, cities like Jericho, Samaria, Bethel, Shiloh, Bethshan, Gezer, Ninevah and Babylon, once forgotten, have been uncovered.
Yes, the Bible speaks of real places and real people. The excavations of these cities have produced items that support the biblical record time and time again. Archaeology is our friend. It has not and will not make one discovery that will rock the foundation of God’s Word.
How can I defend what I believe? One way is to turn to Archaeology and study it and learn the many things that support the Bible as a factual book. Archaeology and The Bible by Joseph Free is a good book for learning about biblical archaeology.
Note: Always read books written by man with a Bible in hand, using God’s Word as your final authority.
