When we do care about what we ought, we will give due care for what is most necessary. As we go about life, are we doing so with a balanced perspective toward what is presently and what is to come?
It has been stated, “Care for your body as though you were going to live forever. Care for your soul as if you were going to die tomorrow.” (attributed to Augustine of Hippo)
This quote is a reminder of both the physical and spiritual aspects of our life. Taking care of the body God has given us for this life will serve to enhance our living while in this realm. However, too often the focus gets centered on the physical while the spiritual is ignored and neglected. We must never forget the present is not all there is to our being. Therefore, we need to live mindful of the soul’s preparation for the eternity God has in mind for us. If we do give due care to the body that is merely temporary, how much more do we need to give due care to the soul’s preparedness for the eternal.
To some Jesus knew were seeking Him because they had eaten their fill of the loaves, (John 6:26), He urged. . .
“(27) Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6:27 ESV)
Food to nourish the flesh to sustain for a lifetime is important and not to be neglected, but even more so is the significance of nourishing the soul for eternity. Maintaining this balanced perspective will sustain us in the ways God intended.
As Solomon noted in picturing the end of life’s journey here. . .
“(7) and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” (Ecclesiastes 12:7 ESV)
Not knowing when our eternity will begin, we must always live prepared for it! As we bear in mind that Heaven is a prepared place (i.e. John 14:2-3) for a prepared people (i.e. 2 Peter 3:11-12), may we give due care to our soul’s well-being with that in mind!
Have a great day NOURISHED FOR TODAY AND ETERNITY!
