Do you remember when growing up the hesitancy to try new foods? As your mother would see you snurl your nose, would she then encourage you to take a taste? How would you know you didn’t like it if you didn’t taste it? The unwillingness to experience one bite could have kept you from something good for the rest of your life.
Then there are some things we need to develop a taste for. With me, that was coffee and clam chowder. At one time I didn’t even like the smell of coffee, but now I love it black and am especially fond of the rich blends. I had tried calm chowder as a child (and my mother eventually settled to serve me potato soup), but several years ago my wife encouraged me to take a taste and now she would have trouble getting me to share mine with her. I’m glad I finally took that taste because, ooh is it good!
In a psalm of David we read. . .
“(8) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” (Psalm 34:8 ESV)
One of the ways in which the word “taste” is used in Scripture conveys the idea of “experiencing or getting to know by gaining an understanding of.” God invites us to try Him. He encourages us to experience His way. He knows if we gain an understanding of it, we will readily see how good it is and how good He is!
And if we have tasted, let us never lose the craving.
“(2) Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation — (3) if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.” (1 Peter 2:2-3 ESV)
Have a great day WITH A TASTE FOR GOD’S GOODNESS!
