“That doesn’t hold water.” This expression is generally used in referring to an argument or explanation that is not logical. We live in a world where many make choices that may strike us as not making sense or being unreasonable in view of what would be better choices. If what we are drawing from in life has no real substance, we are going to find ourselves coming up empty. Therefore, we ought to remain mindful of drawing from the Divine; what God has provided for sustaining our life?
During the days of Jeremiah, the nation had turned away from God while placing their trust elsewhere. He and His Will were being forgotten and the nation was being led further away from Him. Through His servant the prophet Jeremiah, God made the following charge against the nation.
We read. . .
“(12) Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the Lord, (13) for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” (Jeremiah 2:12-13 ESV)
It has been noted that in Palestine there were three main sources of water. The best source was the fresh running water of springs and streams. Secondly, there was the ground water that collected in wells from which it could be drawn. The third source was runoff which was collected in cisterns that had been dug out and then plastered to prevent leaking. [Interestingly, due to his message and warnings being rejected, Jeremiah would be placed in a cistern that contained no water, but only mud into which he sank. (Jeremiah 38:6)] So, here was the picture of Israel who had rejected the living water God offered while they dug cisterns of their own which could not hold water. Rejecting God’s Word they were left with only the sludge of human or worldly wisdom.
To where are we turning? Have we rejected the refreshing wisdom of God and attempted to cut out our own containment that cannot hold water and so being left without the living water our life truly needs?
Jesus encouraged the woman He encountered at Jacob’s well. . .
“(13) Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, (14) but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”” (John 4:13-14 ESV)
Let us continue being drawn to Jesus — the Word Who became flesh (John 1:14) — and drink of the refreshing spring of life found in Him! May we continue turning from human wisdom and wisely accept the refreshing wisdom from above that sustains unto eternal life!
Have a great day DRAWING TO DRINK FROM THE DIVINE SOURCE OF TRUE LIFE!
