Let us then extend that word a bit further to “for-give”! It is through the Son we have the assurance of the forgiveness of our sins by the power of His blood. (1 John 1:7) Having received such a blessing, is our life duly accompanied by a spirit of grace and mercy toward others? It is a sad commentary on a life to have received so much and to then be unwilling to extend it. (i.e. Matthew 18:32-33) How is it with us? Is it easier said than done?
Someone has said, “Forgiveness is just a word until you extend it.” (original source unknown)
After telling the parable of the unmerciful servant, Jesus noted the extension of forgiveness needing to come from the heart. (Matthew 18:35) More than being words expressed, being duly touched by the great merciful kindness of God to forgive us our sins, we ought to be willing to extend it to others. The easier it becomes for us to do so is a reflection of the greater appreciation we are developing for having received it!
Let us then remember the conversation which triggered the telling of the parable where we read. . .
“(21) Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” (22) Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.” (Matthew 18:21-22 ESV)
It’s not really about counting, but about extending the forgiveness from the heart that counts! May it humbly and gratefully remain so with us!
Have a great day WITH GOD’S MERCIFUL SPIRIT EXTENDED THROUGH US!
Carl
