The expression there is “a fly in the ointment” refers to that which spoils a situation that could have been good or pleasant. Though it might refer to a small but annoying flaw, it is seen to spoil the whole! Hidden within that which should be pleasant is something not intended to be there.
Solomon wrote. . .
“(10) Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.” (Ecclesiastes 10:1 ESV)
Life has many pleasant aspects to it. Even looking at the world around us there is much beauty and sweetness to appreciate. However, how often has humanity disrupted the balance of nature? Also, how often have the lives of people been upended by the selfish desires of others? All that God created was and is good. (Genesis 1:31) However, perhaps the “fly in the ointment” has become humanity itself!
Earlier Solomon noted. . .
“(29) See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.” (Ecclesiastes 7:29 ESV)
In spite of having been created good and to possess the spiritual likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), humanity has to a great extent become a “fly in the ointment” in choosing to follow its own desires and schemes. Thus, it should be no surprise life in this world has not remained as God would have it. Therefore, let us continue looking to Him to purify and restore us back to “becoming partakers of the divine nature”. (2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV) God has provided the means of this in Christ. It is only with His help that we can escape the corruption that has arisen in this world. In focusing on the sweetness of life lived to God’s glory and praise, may we accept His help in not being a “fly in the ointment” of His glorious plan, but instead being of those who fly to “mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31) as we soar in accordance with His Divine Will!
Have a great day LIVING RESTORED IN THE HANDS OF OUR CREATOR!
