On Jesus’ third appearance to His disciples (John 21:14) following His resurrection, in a personal conversation with Peter (John 21:15-19), looking ahead Jesus stated to him. . .
“(18) “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (19) (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”” (John 21:18-19 ESV)
Jesus noted a transition in Peter’s life. We know how Peter at one point thought he was stronger than he was (Matthew 26:33), but he did develop into a very bold disciple of Jesus. (Acts 4:18-20; 5:29-32) That was a process of development that took place in connection with Peter’s surrender to the Lord.
The same can be pictured in our own life. Consider a general transition with age. Some things which tend to go with youth are doing one’s own thing, going wherever one wants to, confidence in self, and the pursuit of the joys of life. However, what comes with age is doing what others need, accepting responsibly in going where one must, working with help and support beyond self, and pursuing that which is of the greatest significance. In the continuation of surrendering our life more fully to Jesus there will be such transition of life as growth in spiritual steadfastness increases. It is a dynamic shift from life being about self to being more about Him and what He can and desires to do in and through us. (Ephesians 3:20; Philippians 2:13; Colossians 1:29) Therefore, let us take to heart Jesus’ words, “Follow me”! We may not know through all that following may lead, but we can know that following will ultimately lead to where He is! May we trust Him as we follow on!
Have a great day DECIDEDLY FOLLOWING AS A DISCIPLE OF JESUS!
