As the cautionary statement goes, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” since if that basket is dropped there go all the eggs, so Solomon acknowledged when it comes to our efforts one doesn’t always know “which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.” (Ecclesiastes 11:6) Nevertheless, being all in is a good thing if all is being put into the right thing.
When Jesus told the parable of the rich fool, this man’s focus centered on the need for bigger barns to store away his abundance and so be set for many years of relaxed living. (Luke 12:16-19) Having the bounty was not wrong and there was no indication it had been gained by fraudulent or unjust means, but his focus rested only on himself as he seemingly placed his life security in what he had amassed. However, when his soul was required of him, what then would he have? (Luke 12:20) Having focused on this life while neglecting to consider what was to come, Jesus capped off the parable by stating. . .
“(21) So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:21 ESV)
There is the need to be rich toward God; to duly focus on the inestimable value of a life connected with Him and His Will and how it relates to both our temporary existence here and our Heavenly eternal one! To this end it has been noted, “If you live for the next world, you get this one in the deal; but if you live only for this world, you lose them both.” (C.S. Lewis)
As Paul urged in his first letter to Timothy. . .
“(7) Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; (8) for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)
God, His Will, and an acknowledgement there is more to our existence than the present is to be kept in mind. Training for godliness relates to life now and eternally as our focus, character, and conduct are centered on seeking to glorify God as we trust Him to sustain our life both now and for eternity. May our soul rest not in what we have stored away, but in what God has instore for that eternal day!
Have a great day ACKNOWLEDGING THE SAFETY OF ALL TRUST IN GOD’S BASKET!
