In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he urged. . .
“(1) First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, (2) for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. (3) This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, (4) who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:1-4 ESV)
Though there are other elements of prayer we could consider, the four Paul noted here are significant relative to prayer being offered for all, including even those in governing positions in this world. I need prayer. You need prayer. Everyone needs prayer. The desire of God is for the salvation and acknowledgment of the truth by all and so it is to that end we are to lift up words of supplication, prayer, intercession, and thanksgiving.
The Greek word translated “supplications” is “deesis” which is “primarily a wanting, a need” and also denotes “an asking, entreaty, supplication”. Though this word has been used in secular circles in connection with appealing to others, it is used in the New Testament as being addressed to God. [source: W.E. Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words]
“Supplications” are requests to God on behalf of others regarding their need. It is prayer acknowledging a need; a need of which we seek God to fulfill. As we recognize so many things are either outside of our own control or beyond our personal capability to provide, we are to be duly compelled to entreat God on behalf of others. It is supplication to the one Who has the power to supply! Therefore, may “supplications” be made on behalf of others for both physical and spiritual needs to the end the attention will be ultimately drawn to God as the Sovereign over all!
Have a great day OFFERING SUPPLICATIONS TO THE DIVINE SUPPLIER!
