There is discipline that is exercised in a manner in which it can break down and destroy the spirit of those disciplined by it. The end of such can be the rearing of an angry child who grows up to become a rebellious and violent adult. However, without discipline, what is often reared is a spoiled and selfish human being who merely seeks their own desires. A properly disciplined life is one which is lovingly provided a sense of direction and redirection when needed, with a goal of aiding in the development of good character for living. To provide such reveals the genuine and loving interest in the nurturing one needs as the value of the person remains upheld.
As the writer of Hebrews noted earthly parents doing the best they can in disciplining as imperfect beings, he also noted the discipline of God and its godly goal. We read. . .
“(7)It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? (8) If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. (9) Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? (10) For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. (11) For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” (Hebrews 12:7-11 ESV)
As we look at the Scriptures and the revelation of all God has provided on our behalf, there should be no doubt regarding His loving interest in our greatest good! Though some of life’s experiences may be painful, what is being built through the process? Remaining open to God’s guidance and needed redirection continues the nurturing toward the godly life of sharing His holiness. That is His goal! Therefore, trusting God as we endure is part of the disciplined life we live in Christ.
As we focus on how our Lord endured on our behalf, we are urged to not be worn down by such experiences. (Hebrews 12:3) Instead, may we surrender to the life training of which God provides the opportunity so that the fruit of righteousness may be produced in our life as we are brought toward the maturity of sharing His holiness!
Have a great day GROWING BY GOD’S GODLY GUIDANCE!
