When growing up I remember a friend telling me two of our fellow classmates were going to fight after school and that it was going to be a “good fight”. But what is good about two people beating up on each other? Perhaps attention would be drawn to the boxing ring where a good matchup of professionals is noted as surely to be a “good fight”. In this case one of the contenders is hoping to be declared the champion.
When it comes to conflict, sometimes it is better to walk away than to engage. It has even been said, “You have to choose your battles”, as some things are more worth fighting for than others. So, for us, what is most worth not backing down for?
Paul exhorted Timothy. . .
“(12) Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12 ESV)
Therein is reference to the truly “good fight” worth pressing on in. It is a “good fight” because it has to do with standing for all that is truly good and righteous! It is a fight of significance not only relative to life presently, but eternally. When it comes to our faith in Christ and life in Him it is worth standing firm and faithfully contending for the faith. (Jude 3) It is a spiritual battle for which God has equipped us (i.e. Ephesians 6:11-18) and in which we are enabled to engage in the strength of His might. (Ephesians 6:10) And because of our Lord we can become “more than conquerors through him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37) May we then remain resolute in contending for the faith as we take hold of the eternal hope that is ours in Christ!
Have a great day BEING A CHAMPION IN CHRIST!
Carl
