The “good old days.” They are often spoken of with fondness. People reflect back on times when life seemed better, friendlier, slower paced, or less complicated. However, every period of history has had its challenges. Tough times were part of the “good life” of former days just as they are part of the days in which we presently live. Most likely at some point — provided God grants more days in this realm — the present age will be looked back upon by some as “the good old days.” It is perhaps selective memory — forgetting some of the bad and remembering the especially good — that causes any period to be labeled the “good old days.” Or are we still seeking “good days”?
Solomon indicated it is unwise to ask, “Why were the former days better than these?” (Ecclesiastes 7:10 ESV) We can’t go back to live in those days. We may be encouraged by some of the memories, but it is in the present we live. Therefore, our focus needs to remain on the way we presently choose to live and the good that can be associated with life now. Certainly, all things in life regardless of time period are not good. However, in our walk with God, He can work them for good. (Romans 8:28)
Peter (quoting from Psalm 34:12-16) exhorted. . .
“(10) For “Whoever desires to love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit; (11) let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. (12) For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”” (1 Peter 3:10-12 ESV)
Focused on living right before God in the present will provide good days to reflect on and good days to come. Regardless of life’s challenges, living in and for Christ now marks any day as a good day and provides the outlook toward a bright eternal future as well. Praise God for the good and abundant life (John 10:10) He has provided in Christ.
Have a great day LOVING THE LIFE WE ARE ENABLED TO LIVE IN CHRIST!
