In considering the expression, “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”, we have noted gratitude’s connection with the past and the present. Today let us ponder its connection with the future.
Because of a consciousness of God’s past track record of faithfulness and our living grateful for His present support, we can then be naturally compelled to gratefully trust Him for all that is yet to come. Knowing He is the One from Whom we have already received so much for which to be grateful, we can press on knowing there will be yet more for which to give thanks because of His ongoing loving care!
In a maskil of the sons of Korah we read. . .
“ (8) In God we have boasted continually, and we will give thanks to your name forever.” (Psalm 44:8 ESV)
The boast was not in themselves, but in the Eternal One. Because He is eternal and in Him we have been assured of eternal life, we can look toward thanking Him forever! Do we live continually grateful for that future and hope that is ours?
In spite of the reality of those who were receptive to the Gospel while others were not and even fought against the truth, Paul would still declare. . .
“ (14) But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.” (2 Corinthians 2:14 ESV)
Even while facing opposition and ill-treatment at the hands of some, Paul saw God as not leaving but leading on, and for that he gave thanks. Paul kept focused on the assurance of there remaining something sure and more glorious ahead that would make the present struggles worth it. (read Romans 8:18; 2 Corinthians 4:17-18)
In our present walk in Christ, continue. . .
“(12) giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Colossians 1:12 ESV)
Lest we get too comfortable in the present, let us remember we have a future inheritance yet to be received. Even though we presently have so much for which to be grateful, God encourages us onward and upward toward an even greater eternity with Him!
In light of all we have considered over the past three days, may we continue. . .
“(20) giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (Ephesians 5:20 ESV)
Have a great day GRATEFUL FOR GOD’S PRESENCE IN THE PERPETUAL!
