Someone has said, “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” [shared by Tom Green]
Think about that. Have there not been moments when present circumstances brought twinges of despair and questioning, but then, in looking back, we felt a deep sense of gratitude for what was actually in the works to get us to where we are now? Though we did not see it at the time, looking back we were enabled to see we had not been abandoned, but were still being cared for and carried along by God.
In the psalms David expressed. . .
“(1) I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.” (Psalm 9:1 ESV)
As David reflected back — remembering and telling of God’s wonderful works — he was drawn to whole-hearted thanks to Him. Are we compelled to offer thanks as we view the marvelous history of God’s track record of guidance and provision to those who were blessed through their acceptance of it? Are we also able to see that history in the story of our own life in its connection with God? Even in view of those things which drew our attention to sin and redirected our life — though perhaps a difficult and painful period at the time — are we viewing such with gratitude for the eye-opening opportunity they provided and the salvation to which we were being led? (note Isaiah 12:1; Rom. 6:17)
Therein is gratitude helping us make sense of the past in the assurance that God is able to get us from wherever we are to where He wants us if we will but surrender and follow. May we continually recognize all His commands and works have our utmost best in mind!
Have a great day GRATEFUL FOR GOD’S PRESENCE IN THE PAST!
