When Isaiah wrote down the prophecy regarding the coming of the Messiah and what He would fulfill on our behalf (Isaiah 53), attention was drawn to humanity’s condition and need. We read. . .
“(6) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned — every one — to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6 ESV)
Sheep do not do well left to themselves. They need care. They need guidance. They need protection. Wandering on their own they are vulnerable, get into danger, and can easily become lost.
The same goes for humanity. We need guidance beyond ourselves (i.e. Jeremiah 10:23) and we have a Shepherd sent from above to provide what we need. Jesus — that loving and good Shepherd — was willing to go to the point of being the lamb offering on our behalf. (Isaiah 53:6-7; 1 Corinthians 5:7) Through the gracious offering of His life on the cross, He bore our sins and offered intercession for our transgressions. (Isaiah 53:12)
Being the Good Shepherd, Jesus’ compassionate heart toward us was revealed in His willingness to lay down His life for the sheep. (John 10:11) May we acknowledge our need for His guidance so that we can follow (John 10:27) in the security (John 10:28-29) and blessing of His way.
Have a great day ACCEPTING THE SHEPHERDING THE LORD PROVIDES!
Carl
