The 1929 musical, “Singing In The Rain”, is a wonderful old classic starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds. The song (lyrics by Arthur Freed and music by Nacio Herb Brown) by the same title is sung by Gene Kelly while joyfully dancing with an umbrella while also kicking and splashing through puddles in the middle of a rainstorm. Perhaps one reason I love this film is because my wife and I (prior to marriage) enjoyed many walks in the rain together. Though a cheap date, it was special time walking together with a spirit the rains could not dampen even without an umbrella.
In a psalm of David written while in in the wilderness of Judah, we read. . .
“(5) My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, (6) when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; (7) for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.” (Psalm 63:5-7 ESV)
In earnestly seeking God (Psalm 63:1) with an awareness of His power, glory, and steadfast love (Psalm 63:2-3), David found comfort in the protective shadow of His wings. Despite the conflicts of life, under that shadow David did not lose the spirit for joyful singing. Similarly, Paul and Silas — even after being beaten — were able to sing while in the stocks in a Philippian jail. (Acts 16:23-25) David in the wilderness and Paul and Silas in a prison, acknowledging God’s awareness, a spirit remained giving rise to song.
Under the “umbrella of God” — the shadow of His wings — there can be found comfort in the awareness of His protective and sustaining power through life’s storms. May we grow in such a trust that a spirit of song continually reigns in our heart even in the midst of life’s rains!
Have a great day COMFORTED UNDER GOD’S PROTECTIVE SHADOW!
