Focusing in the “crosshairs” refers to the aiming of a weapon on which are “crosshairs” in which the target is centered. Being in the “crosshairs” is also used figuratively for one who is in a position of having the focus of attention, scrutiny, or criticism centered squarely on them. In either case, “crosshairs” denotes the focal point of significance!
In writing to Christians at Corinth, Paul noted how he had tried to keep the focus away from himself (1 Corinthians 2:1, 3-5) by keeping it centered on the cross of Christ. He wrote. . .
“ (2) For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” (1 Corinthians 2:2 ESV)
That is where Paul fixed the focus. That was foundational to the message of the Gospel. (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) The significance of his message rested there “lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power”! (1 Corinthians 1:17)
Paul wrote to Christians at Galatia who had been led by some to think they needed to turn to following the Law. (i.e. Galatians 3:1-3) These teachers had emphasized the mark of the flesh (Galatians 6:12-13), something which Paul himself had once considered significant for himself (Philippians 3:5) before coming to understand the spiritual aspect of circumcision in connection with Christ. (Galatians 5:6; Philippians 3:3; Colossians 2:11) Therefore, Paul noted his centered focus in stating. . .
“(14) But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14-15 ESV)
In the “crosshairs” of Paul’s focus remained the cross of Christ! The focus fixed on the cross was pivotal to his life and hope. As Christ had become his very life (Galatians 2:20), in living the crucified life offered in daily service to the Lord, Paul would boast in nothing except the power of the cross to adequately redeem his life and deal with his sins.
Where is our focus fixed? Where is the aim of our life centered? Let us keep the cross of Christ in the “crosshairs” of our focus for living so that our life aim remains resting squarely on the Lord (Hebrews 12:2) and the direction He leads.
Have a great day KEEPING THE CROSS IN THE “CROSSHAIRS”!
Carl
