We live in a world where often the expected thing is to treat others in accordance with the manner in which they have treated us. Such is perhaps considered to be equitable and fair. Why treat someone better than they have treated us; give them what they deserve in return! However, we must understand to live in this way is to actually allow others to determine what our actions will be. Do we really want to surrender in such a way to others? Even when mistreated, do we become better by stooping to their level or are we willing to rise to the occasion by living in accordance with a better character of life; a Divine image we were created to possess? (i.e. Genesis 1:26-27) Let us never forget God has treated us far better than we deserve! (i.e. Psalm 103:10; Ezra 9:13) The truly respectable life is to not live by the status quo (i.e. Matthew 5:43 and 46-47), but to remain respectful even when others are not because respectability is truly a part of our own character.
Remember Jesus’ golden principle for living as He urged. . .
“(12) So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 7:12 ESV)
What we do and how we react is to begin with a focus on ourselves. Understanding how we ourselves wish to be treated — even as we humbly acknowledge our own imperfections — is the manner in which we are to be with others irrespective of their actions.
It has been stated: “If they respect you, respect them. If they disrespect you, still respect them. Do not allow the actions of others to decrease your good manners, because you represent yourself not others.” [Mohammad Zeyara]
Such may be very much contrary to how we feel, but is the manner in which we ought to deal with those we encounter in life. Rather than dropping to the level of those who would mistreat us, remaining respectful in our actions toward them might possibly bring them up to our level which is striving to reach toward God’s. (Matthew 5:48; 1 Peter 1:15-16) Therefore, may our life be lived to bring others up regardless of how they have been toward us!
Have a great day REPRESENTING SELF AS A TRUE CHILD OF GOD!
Carl
