Have you ever been judged by your looks? You are not alone. How did it make you feel? Do you think you judge others by their looks before getting to know a new person? Do you find yourself wanting to be part of a certain group?
We need to make sure we are getting to know a person before judging them especially just on their looks. We see in Kings when the Israelites were demanding to have a king so they could be like everyone else. God told Samuel to let them to select a king. They chose someone that was taller than most and was very handsome (they chose based on what they thought a king should look like). They chose Saul and we see in Kings and Chronicles that Saul decided to things according to his own will and not God’s will. Then, God told Samuel he had selected a different king – a young, ruddy-looking shepherd boy named David. God chose David because what was in David’s heart and not on his looks. God judges the heart not by looks!
We also see in Luke 18:9-14 the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. Both were out on a corner praying to God. The Pharisee was mainly putting on a show wanting to be seen for his praying whereas the tax collector was praying from his heart to God. In verse 14 Jesus states, “I tell you, this man [tax collector] went down to his house justified, rather than the other [Pharisee]. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (ESV).
We should not look at others and judge them not worthy of our time. Romans 12:3 states, “For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned” (ESV). Just like we have seen above, the more important part of a person is what is in their heart rather than how they look. Be sure to get to know someone before judging whether or not they are worth befriending.
