According to Paul, hope relates to that which is yet to come, not what one already has. (note Romans 8:24-25) Can we understand how that is so? However, our hope in Christ is based on the foundation of truth declared from Scripture (Romans 15:4) as even noted from Isaiah relative to the Messiah prophesied to come in the line of David, the son of Jesse. (Romans 15:12; Isaiah 11:1 & 10) Though that hope in Christ was noted in the past and its eternal essence is still ahead in its fullness, what can we be experiencing in the present? As we live in expectation of what is yet to come, what ought we to be filled with now?
Having noted the hope that is ours in connection with Christ, Paul encouraged. . .
“(13) May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13 ESV)
In extending hope, God is not merely the God of hype, but of hope! That is how Paul referenced Him. We can be filled with not just excitement about a future hope, but live presently with joy and peace believing what has been promised will be ours! Let us not become unsettled by other things happening in this earthly realm as though God’s purpose will be defeated, because ultimately it will stand. (i.e. Proverbs 19:21) In believing — trusting God’s ability and faithfulness to fulfill what He has declared — we can presently remain filled with joy and peace because of the abiding hope that is ours in Christ!
Backing up a chapter we find Paul noted righteousness, joy and peace as being at the very essence of God’s kingdom in Christ. (Romans 14:17) That essence is intended to be part of our personal life experience in our walk in Christ. God’s faithfulness is the foundation on which our hope rests and in His construction of our life in Christ we become a habitation of joy and peace! By the power of His Spirit, may we be so filled as we press on in trusting faith!
Have a great day REJOICING AND AT PEACE BECAUSE OF OUR HOPE IN CHRIST!
