It has been often said we live in the “Land of Opportunity.” Though the opportunities may vary from person to person there are people who come to this country desiring the opportunity for a better life. This is aside from those who have been born and raised here who may also still be seeking opportunities for the same. As we seek a better life, is our search resting on a foundation of that which is truly better? Or are we caught up in desires which need to be kept in check? It is important to acknowledge that not all opportunities lead to a better life. There is that which is noted as a “crime of opportunity” because, though the crime was not planned or premeditated, the opportunity presented itself and a theft (or other crime) took place. Such becomes a revealing of the character of the individual as some locks have been noted for having the ability to only keep honest people out. But then, if all were honest, would there be a need for locks at all?
We may live in a land of many freedoms where all sorts of opportunities arise, but wisdom must be exercised in what opportunities are seized. How are we using our freedom?
Writing to Christians at Galatia, Paul exhorted. . .
“(13) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (14) For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (15) But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.” (Galatians 5:13-15 ESV)
Paul would later also urge. . .
“(9) And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:9-10 ESV)
Has our life pursuit become all about selfish desires rather than mindfulness of others and the opportunities to serve one another in love? We can be pursuing our own betterment as we seek the betterment of others because we will be living in accordance with a higher calling than merely our own desires. What are we making of our God-given opportunities?
In his letter to Christians at Ephesus, Paul cautioned. . .
“(26) Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, (27) and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26-27 ESV)
As we consider our manner of living and responding to others, let us also remain mindful of whose servant we have become. Whose influence are we allowing to work in and through our life? May it be God’s power and will working in and through us for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13) and our betterment as we also bear in mind our true citizenship is above. (Philippians 3:20) Rather than allowing opportunity for the devil to work, let us eagerly give God the opportunity to fulfill His Will in and through us.
Instead of living according to the flesh, let us live according to the spirit (Romans 8:5 & 13) and so truly live as God would have us. Seizing the varied opportunities to reveal our sincere desire to please God will provide the opportunity for others to see the difference His provision for life presently and eternally has made in our life choices. May our life example then provide opportunity for others to be drawn to Him and His Will!
Have a great day LIVING IN THE LIFE OF GOD GLORIFYING OPPORTUNITIES!
