We learn from reading and reading the right things, and that is important. We also learn by listening and by observation, and that is good. However, we learn by experience as well, and it is wise to be open to it. As life is filled with so many varied experiences, we can learn from both the good and the bad and we should.
Someone has said, “In my life; I have lived, I have loved, I have lost, I have missed, I have hurt, I have trusted, I have made mistakes, but most of all, I have learned.” (original source unknown)
Yes, in all of this, I have learned. Even in loss I have learned what matters most, how much I am loved, and where to turn to be sustained through life’s varied experiences. One of the greatest lessons is that of learning to trust God more in how He is brings me through to where He leads. This is so even in loss because He has provided hope of greater things.
As Paul — writing as a prisoner in Rome — encouraged Christians at Philippi, he reflected on his life and stated. . .
“(11) Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. (12) I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. (13) I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:11-13 ESV)
The Greek word translated “learned” is from “manthano” (to learn) and is akin to “mathetes” (a disciple). In his discipleship to Jesus, Paul had learned the discipline of contentment by trusting in the Lord. Through his varied life experiences, he had learned contentment in looking to the One Who strengthened and sustained Him through it all. That did not mean Paul thought he could do anything and everything he might have wanted to do, but that with the strength of the Lord He was able to be brought through life’s varied moments. May I continue to learn and so trust!
Have a great day EXPERIENCING THE UNVARIED STRENGTH OF THE LORD THROUGH LIFE’S VARIED SCENES!
