Though page after page can be written to provide a biographical view of the life of individuals, sometimes those biographies have been summed up quite beautifully in just a few words. Such expressions usually refer to the character displayed or impact their life has had on those among whom they lived. Those words may also mark the legacy that becomes a part of the life of those encouraged by their example.
As Peter was sharing the gospel of Jesus with Cornelius and his household, before pointing to the crucified Christ and the forgiveness of sins that can be received in His name (Acts 10:39-43), Peter summed up the life of Jesus by stating. . .
“(38) how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38 ESV)
Good is what we can expect associated with God. (note Matthew 19:17) Goodness is what marked the essence of our Lord’s being! Jesus was good to others not because it was deserved but because it was needed and would ultimately bring glory to the Father. Are we not experiencing that goodness?
When it was time for Jesus to come onto life’s scene, even in His infancy there was attention drawn to goodness associated with Him. As shepherds were watching their flocks in the night, they were startled by the appearing of an angel of the Lord.
We read. . .
“(10) And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11 ESV)
Jesus came to earth during a time when there was definitely a need for some goodness and that need remains even today. Among all the bad news there is need for “good news” and maintaining our focus on Jesus aids in having it associated with our life.
Let us focus serious attention on the goodness modeled by Jesus. To be remembered for doing good is a good thing, is it not? Every time we read through the Gospels may we take note of the goodness of Jesus in order to model it in our own life. Having this essence in us can then help open the door of opportunity for sharing His good news with others as well.
Have a great day FOR GOODNESS SAKE TO GOD’S GLORY!
