In John’s recording of Jesus’ crucifixion, he shared our Lord’s final words from the cross where we read. . .
“(28) After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” (29) A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. (30) When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.” (John 19:28-30 ESV)
That Jesus had actually died was confirmed by His executioners. (John 19:34-35) This had been the lifting up that would draw to Him. (John 12:27-32) At that moment, Jesus had completed what He had come to fulfill, as through the giving of His blood on the cross He provided for our eternal redemption. However, what was finished was not the end! What was finished should be seen as adequate as the reality encourages our confidence in pressing on as we eagerly look ahead to the fullness of blessing in Him.
In contrasting the shadow of the offerings under the old law to the greater reality in Christ, the writer of Hebrews encouraged his readers in stating. . .
“(27) And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, (28) so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” (Hebrews 9:27-28 ESV)
Sin was adequately dealt with on the cross. There is no need for further sacrifice. In great contrast to the repeated offerings under the old, Jesus accomplished once for all by His single offering the adequate means of dealing with our sins! Therefore, let our focus be lifted up in encouragement that we can press on completely forgiven. And let us also set our mind on things above as we live with eager anticipation of the fullness of our eternal blessings in Christ. (note Colossians 3:1-4) Trusting in what Jesus accomplished to deal fully with sin, may we confidently live in anticipation of and in preparation for His return!
Have a great day PRESSING ON WITH AN UPWARD VIEW!
