A “plumb line” is a cord with a weight attached to one end so as to dangle freely for determining an exact vertical standing. It is used to ensure while building upward that the vertical is straight and not leaning. In being used, the “plumb line” doesn’t change or shift according to the desires of the carpenter, but remains true! It remains that to which the work is to continue to line up.
In Isaiah we read. . .
“(16) therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ (17) And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line; and hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.”” (Isaiah 28:16-17 ESV)
Though this was addressed to the nation of Israel as their focus was not fit squarely on the Will of God, do we not see how we live in a world out of kilter; out of alignment? Unrighteousness rather than righteousness is being followed as many seek to do their own thing and live life according to their own desires. Lives are being built up not true to God’s “plumb line” and are destined to collapse and topple at some point.
Are we continuing to acknowledge God’s “plumb line”; His righteous and just standard as revealed in the Scriptures? In view of God’s “plumb line”, how are we building?
Paul urged. . .
“(12) Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. (13) Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.” (Romans 6:12-13 ESV)
Rather than yielding to our own desires, let us continue seeking after God’s righteousness so that our life lines up in accordance with His Will. Instead of building our own way that could leave us leaning to one side or the other, may we allow His Divine standard to keep our life vertically aligned with Him as our life is built up on the foundation of the truth of His Word!
Have a great day SEEKING TO BE UPRIGHT BEFORE GOD!
