When you look in the mirror, do you believe what you see or do you say, “That can’t be me”? If you are still in your youth, you may like the image staring back at you. However, as the aging process takes place it leaves some wondering who that person is looking back at them.
When I look in the mirror, I can see an aging man with wrinkles and white hair (at least what hair there is). However, when I walk away there are times that image does not remain in my mind. Sometimes I still envision myself in the strength of my youth. And though I am blessed with good health and able to engage in high energy activities, there are still times when in doing something I am reminded of an aging body. Therefore, as I look in the mirror, I do need to consider the reality of the man I see.
As this is true physically, it is also of utmost importance spiritually. A physical mirror provides a mere image of the outward person, but there is a mirror which aids in coming to grips with the inner self and I need to give serious consideration to what it reflects regarding my life?
James noted the manner in which the word of God serves as a mirror for the soul where we read. . .
“(22) But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. (24) For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. (25) But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” (James 1:22-25 ESV)
As I look into God’s Word, what is reflected with regard to my life? Do I read and then walk away forgetting to put into practice what I am supposed to look like as the child of God I am to be? (i.e. John 1:12; Ephesians 5:8; 3 John 4) Do I see what is out of place and walk away with a mussed life or am I turning to act in accordance with the new me I’m supposed to be in Christ? (i.e. 2 Corinthians 5:17) Do I see my blemishes and accept them or do I surrender to God’s Will for their removal? (i.e. Philippians 2:15) Though I understand in the flesh I bear the image of the man of dust, I must also keep in mind how I am to bear the image of the man from Heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:49)
The truth of the life surrendered to walking in the will of God is that though the flesh may continue the aging process, the inner self can continue being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16) May we daily look into God’s mirror, honestly assess what is reflected, and resolve to act upon the Divine Will which continues its transformative work (i.e. 2 Corinthians 3:18) of our becoming all God desires us to be!
Have a great day MIRRORING THE DIVINE ESSENCE WE WERE CREATED TO POSSESS!
