There are things that ought to be done when it is in our power to do so, such as helping others. (i.e. Proverbs 3:27-28) And James warned to know the right thing to do and to not do it is sin. (James 4:17) However, doing something merely because we are in a position to do so does not always mean it is the thing to be done. As we consider the greater impact on others, the thing to be done might be the restraining of action or refraining from speaking of our mind.
Consider the example of Jesus when the woman caught in the act of adultery was brought to Him. (John 8:1-11) As her accusers were attempting to test Him (John 8:6) with the issue, Jesus at first began writing with His finger on the ground. But as they pressed Him, we read. . .
“ (7) And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”” (John 8:7 ESV)
Jesus put things back in their lap as He resumed writing on the ground, and ultimately — one by one from the oldest to the youngest — those who had brought the accusation began to leave. Not one of them was in a position to cast the first stone. However, let us remember there was One present in a position to do so but didn’t. Jesus, the only one in the room without sin (i.e. Hebrews 4:14-15) neither picked up a stone, nor condemned her, but did direct the woman away from her life of sin. (John 8:11) Therein Jesus presented a powerful lesson regarding the great mercy of God! As we strive to walk in His steps, how merciful are we when the situation calls for it?
Remember Jesus’ encouragement. . .
“(7) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7 ESV)
Being in the position to have needed mercy, let us be merciful and so continue receiving the mercy we need! To be merciful is a reflection of living life by the wisdom from above. (James 3:17) May we live by that wisdom as we acknowledge how mercifully blessed we are!
Have a great day MERCIFULLY BLESSED TO MERCIFULLY BLESS!
