Football players (as well as athletes in other sports) wear protective gear to ward off injury during their engagement in the sport. Besides the importance of serving to prevent the serious injury of a concussion, the helmet also offers protection by means of the face guard and jaw pads. Football players also use a mouth guard to prevent dental injuries. Since in the fast action of the game collisions occur quickly, it is important for such protection to always be in place.
As we go about the interactions of life, things can happen quickly, and our reactions need to be kept in check. Remembering that in the power of the tongue are both death and life (Proverbs 18:21) we ought to pray as David for God’s help to . . .
“(3) Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!” (Psalm 141:3 ESV)
That’s the “mouth guard” protection we need for daily life. Though our speech ought to always be guarded by graciousness (Proverbs 16:24; Colossians 4:6), sometimes we need to also recognize the wisdom of keeping the door of our lips shut. May we seek God’s aid that our words be not injurious to either others or ourselves!
Have a great day GUARDED FOR GODLY INTERACTION!
