Jesus instructed. . .
“(21) You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ (22) But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew 5:21-22 ESV)
Though what was generally taught by the teachers of the day focused primarily on outward actions, Jesus went deeper to the heart wherein the thoughts take root and from where the actions arise. What goes on within us is important to consider. Why? Because what begins in our mind (the feelings of the heart) can move to our lips (the words directed at others; derogatory expressions and name calling) and then impact the manner in which we act (how others are ultimately treated whether directly or indirectly). Though the actions may not lead to physical killing, because the love is not there, actions promoting a spirit of life will most likely not exist. And Jesus drew serious attention even to the consequences of the words not only in the view of others, but also in the view of God and His ultimate judgment.
We need to guard our heart against anything that might lead to destructive attacks on others even verbally. Therefore, may we nip such in the bud before we allow ill will to begin to blossom and produce its awful fruit.
Have a great day DULY CONSIDERING WHAT IS HARBORED IN THE HEART!
