“I” is in “gift”, but is that what gifts are about? Are gifts about getting? That is something we enjoy and we ought to express due appreciation for what we do receive. However, another manner in which “I” enters into the giving of gifts is when there is the personal desire to gain the attention for having been a giver. Jesus addressed that attitude. (Matthew 6:1-4) Though being noted for having given does not in itself negate the gift, if that is the reason we give we need an attitude check.
Still, there is yet another aspect of the “I” in giving which was exemplified by Paul because of the significance of the relationships which developed through his sharing of the Gospel. In his second letter to the church at Corinth he stated. . .
“(15) I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?” (2 Corinthians 12:15 ESV)
The servant heart of Paul compelled him to not only give of what he had, but to give his very self on behalf of others. Is that not the love our Lord demonstrated in giving Himself on the cross? Is it not a clear declaration of genuine love? Being selfless is not “I”-less because it includes the giving of self. May we grow in understanding the significance of the “I” in the midst of “gift” as we live in imitation of Paul as He imitated Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1) To Christ — in whom we have received every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3) — be the glory!
Have a great day INCLUDING “I” IN OUR GIVING!
