An “opportunist” is defined as “one who exploits circumstances to gain immediate advantage rather than being guided by consistent principles or plans.” It is also noted for referring “to someone making use of opportunities, especially to gain an advantage for themselves.” All of that seems to focus on being self-serving. However, there is a sense in which we are to be an “opportunist” while serving God’s purposes in our life.
Writing to Christians at Ephesus, Paul urged. . .
“(15) Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, (16) making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15-16 ESV)
Making the best use of the time we have is utilizing the opportunities it provides. That is living as an “opportunist”. Why should we live in such a manner? Because of the world’s evil condition. We are to wisely use the time God has presently afforded us because we do not know how long the world has (or individuals have) to duly respond to His Will. Also, continuing to engage in the good service of God aids in maintaining a focus where we are less likely to be drawn into the evil of the world ourselves. Wisely walking in the wisdom of God, rather than being influenced by the world around us we can influence it by being the salt and light (Matthew 5:13-16) we have been called to be! May we therefore pray about, look for, and take advantage of the opportunities to serve God’s purposes each day provides!
Have a great day GRABBING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GOOD TO GOD’S GLORY!
