How is it that two people can witness the same thing and describe it differently? Often it has to do with the vantage point from which the scene is viewed or due to a limitation of seeing the whole scene. Because of this, perceptions can be wrong.
It has been said, “The perspective is more important than the perception.” (Amit Abraham)
One’s perception of things is based on the senses; what is seen, heard, tasted, touched, and smelled. Perspective has to do with one’s point of view or frame of reference and has a dynamic impact on how things are then perceived or interpreted. Though perception might be immediate, it is perspective that leads toward an interpretation or conclusion. Therefore, understanding how perceptions are generally shaped by our beliefs or experiences, we must be mindful of that which is foundational to our life perspective; our overall attitude and point of view. This is no truer than with regard to our spiritual wellbeing.
In his letter to the church at Corinth, Paul noted the contrast. . .
“(14) The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (15) The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. (16) “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:14-16 ESV)
Where our mind is set will have a dynamic impact on our perceptions of the truth of God and how life ought to be lived. (i.e. Romans 8:5-8) Due to our limited view over the breadth of life, we need a perspective higher than our own or the world’s. (i.e. Isaiah 55:8-9; Jeremiah 10:23) It is from the vantage point of God that life can be kept in proper perspective as we understand there is more to our existence than meets the eye. (i.e. 2 Corinthians 4:18) May we continue looking to God for the spiritual discernment we need for living!
Have a great day LOOKING AT LIFE THROUGH GOD’S SPIRITUAL LENS.
