“Plethora” is defined as “superfluity, excess.” This word’s English origin comes from the Greek “plethora” which literally refers to “fullness”. [source: Webster’s Dict.] When I think of a “plethora” my mind quickly goes to considering the blessings associated with God.
As Jude began his short letter, in his greeting he stated. . .
“(2)May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you.” (Jude 2 ESV)
The Greek word “multiplied” in the text is “plethunthein” (from “plethuno”) which is a lengthened form of “pletho” (to fill) and “plethos” (a multitude) and signifies to increase or multiply. [W.E. Vine] That was Jude’s wish for his readers; for mercy, peace, and love to not merely be added, but multiplied — be in abundance as a “plethora” — in their life. In their relationship in Christ, this was his prayer for them.
To me it depicts the kind of math God has been and is willing to do on our behalf. He doesn’t just merely add good things to our life, but multiplies His blessings in abundance. And this is the desire we ought to have for others around us as we seek to share with them the Good News of Jesus and the abundant life (John 10:10) and everlasting hope (Titus 1:2) in Him!
As Paul noted in his letter to the church at Ephesus. . .
“(20) Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, (21) to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 ESV)
The literal Greek translates, “beyond all to do excessively beyond”. It may not be all we think we want, but it will be all we truly need in accordance with the Divine Will of God! May we trust Him for the “plethora” of blessings with which He is able to fill our life both now and for eternity!
Have a great day TRUSTING THE MASTER OF MULTIPLICITY!
